Where the name "blackjack" comes from
The story usually told goes like this. Early in the 20th century, American gambling houses drew in players with a bonus paying ten to one for the ace of spades together with a black jack (spades or clubs). That hand was called a "blackjack", and the name stayed with the game long after the bonus disappeared.
The French playing-card historian Thierry Depaulis, however, found no evidence that such a bonus ever existed. In his account, the name began with prospectors in the Klondike Gold Rush at the end of the 19th century, who called the American version of twenty-one "blackjack". Which story is true is still not settled.
Twenty-one, by the author of Don Quixote
The oldest record of a game aiming at 21 comes from Spain. In "Rinconete y Cortadillo", a short story written around 1601–1602 by Cervantes, the author of Don Quixote, two card cheats in Seville are experts at "veintiuna" (twenty-one). Getting close to 21 without going over, and counting the ace as 1 or 11, are already part of the game.
The game later became fashionable in 18th-century French society as vingt-un, its rules appeared in Britain in 1800, and early in the 19th century it crossed to America.
Basic strategy, worked out by four soldiers
In 1956 the Journal of the American Statistical Association published "The Optimum Strategy in Blackjack". Its authors were Roger Baldwin and three other soldiers at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. With no computer to help, they spent months on desk calculators working out the best way to hit, stand, double and split.
Known as the "Four Horsemen of Aberdeen", they laid the foundations of today's basic strategy and were later inducted into the Blackjack Hall of Fame.
Beat the Dealer
The four soldiers' paper caught the eye of the mathematician Edward Thorp. Using the IBM 704 computer at MIT, he showed that the player's advantage changes with the cards left in the deck. His 1962 book Beat the Dealer became a best-seller and brought the term card counting into common use.
The Las Vegas casinos panicked. On 1 April 1964 the Nevada Resort Hotel Association announced new rules restricting doubling and splitting. Players simply stayed away from the blackjack tables, and within weeks the old rules were back. Thanks to card counting, blackjack became more popular than ever as a game that might just be beaten.
The birth of the Hi-Lo count
Thorp's first method, which tracked the proportion of ten-value cards, was a little hard to use at a real table. A simpler approach presented in 1963 counted 2–6 as +1, 7–9 as 0 and tens and aces as −1: the "Hi-Lo". Devised by Harvey Dubner and spread by the books of Stanford Wong and others, it is still one of the most widely used counts (see Counting).
The city that could not bar counters
In the 1970s and '80s Ken Uston became famous for counting cards with teams of players. Turned away by an Atlantic City casino, he went to court, and in 1982 the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled that casinos there could not exclude players simply for counting cards.
Instead of throwing counters out, Atlantic City casinos turned to shuffling earlier and limiting bets.
The MIT students
In the 1980s and '90s, teams of MIT students and graduates won large sums in casinos across the country. Their story became famous through the 2003 book Bringing Down the House and the 2008 film 21.
Shuffling machines and 6 to 5
The contest between counters and casinos goes on. Against a continuous shuffling machine, which mixes used cards straight back in, counting is useless. In the 2000s more and more tables cut the payout on a natural from 3 to 2 to 6 to 5, which alone adds about 1.4% to the house edge. Checking the payout before you sit down is part of playing blackjack today.
The "21+3" side bet seen on many blackjack tables was patented by Derek Webb, the inventor of three card poker (see Three Card Poker Tales).
Blackjack in numbers
With six decks, your first two cards are a natural about 4.75% of the time, roughly once in 21 hands.
The dealer busts about 28% of the time, and over 40% of the time when showing a 5 or 6.
With standard rules, playing basic strategy brings the house edge down to around 0.5%.
In Cervantes' Spain, the usual pack had 40 cards, without the eights and nines.
