Blackjack is a one-on-one contest between you and the dealer. However many people sit at the table, you never play against the other players. Your goal is to finish closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. Going over 21 is a bust, and a bust loses on the spot.
You choose whether to draw or stop; the dealer must follow fixed rules. That imbalance is exactly why strategy matters.
Card values
2–10: face value
J, Q, K: 10 each
A (ace): 1 or 11, whichever helps
Suits make no difference. Tens, jacks, queens and kings together are called ten-value cards: 16 of every 52, about 31%. The fact that ten is the most common value underpins most of the strategy that follows.
Soft and hard hands
A hand that can count an ace as 11 without busting is soft; a hand without an ace, or one that can only count it as 1, is hard. A soft hand cannot bust on the next card, so you can play it more aggressively.
A♠6♥soft 17 (7 or 17)
10♣7♦hard 17
A♠6♥10♣hard 17 (ace counts 1)
At this site's table, soft totals are shown both ways, for example "7/17".
Blackjack (a natural)
An ace plus a ten-value card as your first two cards is a blackjack, or natural. It is the best hand and normally pays 3 to 2: a $10 bet wins $15. If the dealer also has blackjack, it is a push.
A♣K♦blackjack
With six decks you are dealt one about 4.7% of the time, roughly once every 21 hands. An ace and a ten made after a split counts as 21, not blackjack, and pays even money.
Watch out for 6 to 5 tables
Some tables pay blackjack only 6 to 5. However tempting the low minimum, that one rule costs about 1.4% of everything you bet, more than basic strategy can ever win back.
How a round plays out
Bets: each player places chips in a betting circle. Betting closes when the dealer calls "no more bets".
The deal: starting from the seat on the dealer's left (first base) and moving clockwise, everyone gets one card face up, then the dealer takes one. A second round follows, and the dealer's second card is placed face down: the hole card. The dealer's face-up card is the up card.
Insurance: when the up card is an ace, you may take insurance against a dealer blackjack.
Peek: with an ace or ten up, the dealer checks the hole card. A dealer blackjack is turned over at once and the round is settled.
Players act: from first base onward, each player hits, stands, doubles, splits or surrenders.
The dealer acts: the hole card is turned over; the dealer hits 16 or less and stands on 17 or more, with no choice in the matter.
Settlement: remaining hands are compared with the dealer's; winners are paid and losing bets collected.
Your options and hand signals
Real casinos expect hand signals rather than words, so the cameras record every decision.
Action
What it does
Signal
Hit
Take another card. As many as you like, but over 21 loses
Tap the table with a finger
Stand
Take no more cards
Wave a flat hand, palm down, over your cards
Double down
Add a bet equal to the first and take exactly one more card
Place chips beside your bet and hold up one finger
Split
Split two cards of equal value into two hands, with an equal bet on each
Place chips beside your bet and make a V with two fingers
Surrender
Give up the hand and get half your bet back
Draw a line across the felt with a finger (often said aloud as well)
Insurance
With an ace up, bet up to half your wager that the dealer has blackjack; pays 2 to 1
Place chips on the insurance line
Even money
With a blackjack against an ace, take a 1 to 1 payout at once; it is insurance in another form
Answer "even money" when the dealer asks
About doubling
Most casinos allow doubling only on your first two cards. Some let you double for less than your original bet, but when the situation favours you, double for the full amount.
About splitting
Many casinos let you split any two ten-value cards; some require the same rank
Split aces get one card each, and ace plus ten after a split is 21, not blackjack
Re-splitting is usually allowed up to three or four hands in total

Once you bust you have lost, even if the dealer busts later. Most of the house edge comes from that simple order: the players act first.
Dealer rules
The dealer must hit 16 or less and must stand on 17 or more. Only soft 17 (such as ace and six) varies by casino.
S17 (stands on soft 17): better for the player
H17 (hits soft 17): costs the player about 0.2%
The felt usually says which: "Dealer must draw to 16 and stand on all 17s" (S17) or "Dealer must hit soft 17" (H17). Check it before you sit down.
Rules that vary between casinos
The fine print of blackjack differs from casino to casino and table to table, and every difference moves your expected return. The table below shows the change in the player's expected return for common variations, against a base of eight decks, S17 and double after split (Wizard of Odds figures).

Number of decks and game format
Fewer decks favour the player and make counting more powerful. Six- and eight-deck games dealt from a shoe are the norm, but some casinos also run one- or two-deck "pitch" games, dealt by hand with players holding their cards.
Hole card and peek
In the American game the dealer takes a hole card at the start and checks for blackjack when an ace or ten is showing. In the no-hole-card game common in Europe and Australia, the dealer's second card comes only after the players have acted. If it makes blackjack you can lose your double and split money too, so the standard advice is not to double or split against a ten or an ace (a few casinos return the extra chips, "original bets only").
Surrender
Late surrender lets you fold after the dealer has checked for blackjack; early surrender lets you fold before. Early surrender is so good for the player that you will rarely find it, and many casinos offer no surrender at all.
How the cards are shuffled
Besides hand shuffling, casinos use automatic shufflers that shuffle the whole shoe, and continuous shuffling machines (CSMs) that take the used cards back after every round. With a CSM the remaining cards never become lopsided, so counting is useless. How far into the shoe the cards are dealt before the shuffle is the penetration, set by where the cut card is placed.
Side bets
Many tables add separate bets, such as a pair bet on your first two cards or "21+3", which pays on poker hands made with your two cards and the dealer's up card. The payouts look exciting, but the house edge is normally far higher than on blackjack itself.
Table limits and mid-shoe entry
Minimum and maximum bets are posted on the table sign. Some tables are "no mid-shoe entry": you may only sit down after a shuffle. Some casinos let one player bet on several spots.
This site's table
The standard rules are six decks, blackjack pays 3 to 2, dealer stands on soft 17, double after split, late surrender, and bets of $10–$1,000. Decks, payout, soft 17, double after split, surrender and the bet limits can be changed in the "Table rules" panel below the table. Fixed: the dealer peeks, you may double on any first two cards, split up to four hands, split aces once with one card each, insurance pays 2 to 1, and four cards are burned after each shuffle.
Table etiquette
Buying in: put your cash on the table between rounds rather than handing it to the dealer; the dealer changes it into chips.
Don't touch the cards: in face-up shoe games, players never touch the cards.
Don't touch your bet once cards are out: place double and split chips beside your original bet.
Use hand signals: some casinos won't accept a spoken decision alone.
Put the phone away: calls and photos at the table are usually banned, and using a calculator or app to help is treated as cheating.
Leaving: ask the dealer to "colour up" your small chips into larger ones.
Tipping: not required, but players often tip after a win or place a small bet for the dealer.

S17(소프트 17 스탠드): 플레이어에게 유리
테이블 펠트에 'Dealer must draw to 16 and stand on all 17s'(S17)나 'Dealer must hit soft 17'(H17)이라고 인쇄되어 있으니 앉기 전에 확인하세요.
